Before the turn of the century, we will witness the launch of one of the most exciting, most promising -- and riskiest -- technology ventures to challenge the telecom industry worldwide. Behind a remarkable variety of labels, several international consortia are planning the introduction of global satellite services, with many promising to deliver the ultimate telecommunications solution -- global connectivity to and from any spot on the earths surface. All are hoping to cash in on strong demand for telecommunications services in developing countries, where there exists an enormous gap between demand and availability of conventional fixed and mobile communications services.

What is new, however, is the planned provision of satellite-based, global mobile voice and data communications services to pocket-sized, hand-held devices.
